How Wellness Plays an Essential Role in Growing a Business and Creating a Meaningful Life
What is wellness, and how do you incorporate it into your life?
In my business, some of my clients come to me with a narrow view on this. It is initially considered something you do in your off time — after the work is done, the bills paid, and everyone else cared for.
What you may not know is that self care and/or wellness is an essential element in growing a business and in creating a meaningful life.
You may know this to be true and yet still very little changes. Turning that around can be easier said than done.
Wellness. Is one of our top priorities. Or it needs to be. This was the topic of my first book. Several years ago, the idea of ‘put your mask on first’ hit home. I realized that it’s important to take care of myself well. If I don’t, then how can I take care of others, especially in business and professional relationships.
Wellness, the art of caring for you, the whole you. Not just eating right and exercise.
In the beginning we are taught that health is about eating right and getting exercise. They are important for sure and I am here to tell you it is so much more than that. And it is a good thing!
There are certain ideas that are prevalent when growing a business that didn’t start off including self care or even self growth. If you want to grow your business you are going to have to grow as a person. Growing your business is going to require you to grow as a person, because what got you to where you are may not get you to where you want to go!
The possibilities are endless for how to improve and maintain your own wellness or well-being.
Some ideas include taking a sick day — which some companies refer to now as Mental Health Days — taking time out to attend a yoga class, or having a massage.
In a work environment, there is or has been a ‘reward system’ for not taking your sick days. The less days off you had, the better of an employee you were seen as, and the more likely you were to advance.
Now we know better, to some degree. We are given days off, yet we still don’t take them. Why? Fear of falling behind, research shows. You want the days, yet you are afraid to take them.
Wellness. It is about taking care of the whole person. Mind. Body. Soul.
This is an aspect that people do not realize, and it is what I teach my clients. Wellness is different for every person, so I help them create a plan just for them.
It is taking care of the body. Inside and out. Your body is a vessel for the work you are to do here. You only have one, so you need to care for it.
It is taking care of the mind. Working on your mindset, the beliefs that hold you back. Doing something everyday to grow, to expand and to think, which is a lifelong process or activity. It can be fun too.
It is taking care of the soul, your spirit, and the connection you have to God or the Universe. It’s the spirituality piece. It’s doing what you love, your purpose, what makes you feel good. That inner happiness and joy that makes you excited about life and, well, everything. It’s listening to your intuition and following it, even if it may be uncomfortable.
It is also getting support when you need it. Because it can be complicated to change and to break through this on your own, a good, trained mentor or coach can make the difference here.
Is there one or more areas mentioned above that needs attention? Choose one and ask yourself what are you doing currently and what is one thing you can add?
If you were to take a Mental Health Day, or a day off, what would you be called to do with it? To be outside in nature? To sleep in? To work on an art project? What would make you feel good, refreshed, and full of energy for what you are working on?
Sometimes time away, even a short amount, can be the very thing that opens the door to the next opportunity.
