Negativity is Holding You Back and Making You Sick
Constant negative thoughts can lead to disease. Worrying about someone or a situation can cause headaches, and over a period of time those headaches could lead to bigger issues. When you carry around these negative thoughts for a period of time, and this is easy to do, they can settle into your body and show up as health concerns like back pain, knee pain and headaches as mentioned above.
The buildup of negative thoughts, or consistently being around negative people, can create or enhance anxiety and depression.
On a smaller level, think about when you are talking to other people, and how easily the negativity can flow. It can be commonplace for groups of people at any age to sit and talk about other people or their situations. It quickly turns to complaining and can get out of hand. Before you know it there is irritation, agitation, and even dislike for the situation and the person. You take this home with you, or back to the office, where you carry it around to others and you probably are not even aware of it. This affects how you think about other people, how you act toward them and often how you think about yourself.
For the business owner or professional, this gets played out in a different way. If you have a negative outlook it will show up in your performance as a person and even in your business as a whole, which will inevitably affect your results.
You get what you focus on! That’s right, what you focus on grows! Whether it is positive or negative, it will grow.
You also get — and, even more importantly, you become — what you surround yourself with!
So, if you hang out with people who like to complain, or gossip or say bash their boss or spouse, it won’t be long before you notice every possible negative thing about your own boss or spouse and then begin complaining about them. In time it will harm your outlook on life and the way you approach your work and even your relationships.
One of the most important elements to consider here is, how does all the negativity make you feel?
Secondly, how important are these relationships to you and do you want the negativity of others to get in the way of them?
Take a look at your priorities, which isn’t always easy to do by yourself. If your relationship is important to you, you have the choice of how you think, act and care for it.
Take a look at your values, which most people need help to determine. If relationships for example are high on that list, then you must be mindful of the negativity of others and how much you allow into your mind and your life!
In your business or professional career, if you participate in activities or groups that don’t align with your values and beliefs it will negatively affect your success on many levels. You have the power to choose.
As an example, say you are a new business owner and you’ve joined a group to help you grow it quickly and you find that a lot of time gets spent on socializing and talking about successes with little real ‘work’ or brainstorming happening. You can sit there week after week and feel frustrated and stressed about it, or you can decide to do something about it. Speaking up or even leaving the group if that’s necessary to accomplish the goals you have set.
Negativity plays such a large role in the confidence, performance, and results many of my clients experience before working with me — so much so that I developed these 6 ways to train yourself to think less negatively.
Changing your own way of thinking is only part of the process and often the most difficult. It cannot be done on your own because most of this negativity is socially accepted and therefore flies under the radar.
Do you need help determining your values and priorities as noted above, and developing strategies to put them at the forefront of your thoughts, actions and decision-making? I have helped many clients over the years do just that, with amazing results — it is a unique part of our system.
