5 Ways to Manage Your Wellbeing as an Entrepreneur and Owner of a Business

First of all, let’s get clear on what is meant by wellbeing. It can and does encompass a wide range of elements and let’s make sure you’re all on the same page. Wellbeing means being happy, healthy, and content with where you are currently and where you are headed. There are mental, psychological, social, economic and spiritual elements to everyone’s wellbeing.

In my practice I call this a holistic view — looking at every aspect of your life and giving some attention to each piece. Let me explain. As an entrepreneur, especially as you’re just starting out and even as you are uplevelling the business, it can take up all of your time and energy. To the point that you are unable to do much else, let alone fully take good care of yourself.

Not only that, most people have also been trained to pay attention to others first, to take care of what other people in their lives need before they tackle their own needs or ‘to-dos.’ It’s easy to be that way and there is social support for it. However, it can be detrimental to some people, this is how disease often shows up and can take over. Or relationships can suffer if one is not mindful of this.

What can you do… to gain the success you want and still attend to your wellbeing. Here are five ideas:

One. Make sure you carve out time for yourself. I know this sounds counterintuitive, and if you’re working all the time it really can take a toll on you. This doesn’t mean you have to take a day to go to the spa — it simply means you go to the gym, or you take a walk outside, maybe it’s a midday meditation. It means also to take time out for lunch, if you eat at your desk then close your computer.

Two. How often do you look at your finances and or your financial situation? Many people ignore this part of their business and their lives, often because of fear or even thinking it’s not necessary unless there’s a bill to pay. This is one of the biggest misconceptions people have and so I’ve made it a unique and valuable aspect of the work we do with clients, and the results can be astounding.

Three. Are you conscientious about the foods you eat, and do you pay attention to what you are feeding your mind? What do I mean? Your mindset is one of the most critical factors in your success, and as you are growing it, reading the news, or looking at the economy can induce fear and worry. Try to keep that to a minimum or only as needed.

Four. Look at the social aspects of your current lifestyle. After spending about two years in and out of lockdown and quarantine due to Covid, something completely unprecedented, we are just now seeing the effects it has had on people. One of those is the lack of connection, of interfacing in person with others, even depression because of that isolation. Do you need to make a point to plan some interactions with others? Doesn’t have to be a big party, a simple dinner, or walk outside can be a good start.

Five. Consider the spiritual aspect of your life and even knowledge that you bring to your business and to everything you do. That means faith, trust, hope and being of service to others. Were you even taught this had a place in business? And do you know that in order to grow your business, this side of you is going to have to grow too?

Wellbeing and self-care have become two of the most important elements that entrepreneurs and executives must pay attention to in order to grow their business and their income. Contrary to popular belief and the ideas of the generations before now, it’s no longer just about hard work and time.

I hope these five ideas have helped you identify ways to improve your wellbeing. They are just a start and there are so many more ways and tips I can help you discover, which is why I make wellbeing a prominent part of my coaching and experiences.

It’s time to make your wellbeing a priority — for the benefit of yourself, your relationships, your business, and your results and income.
